This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

I wonder if Series WW will even match X360 NA total (46.14). Looks like it might even struggle to sell 40 millions at this rate.

Microsoft needs to do a bundle with GTA6 and $50.00 off.

yes, i just looked up, wow, not much hope for microsoft with the xseries

marketing rights prevents you from bundling a game with your system? Didn't know that

2zosteven Hardstuck-Platinum (on 10 January 2025)

well if not that is what microsoft needs to do along with a price cut

  • +3

Esparadrapo 2zosteven (on 11 January 2025)

Microsoft stopped the price cuts because they lose plenty of money per unit sold without them. A price cut to appeal to players that are likely to buy just GTA VI that is very likely to have royalty agreements looks like a net loss for the division.

Well now that you say it I can’t say I’m positive about that.

It could, all marketing agreements are different and all are rarely ever known in full to the public. Sony could have an agreement with Take-Two saying that GTA VI cannot be bundled with hardware other than PS5. Or they could not. Sometimes it can say Microsoft can't do TV commercials about the game - but can do online advertising. Or vice versa. Like I side, those agreements can be many, many things that we will never know.

I agree but considering this is GTA 6 I would be surprised if Sony didn't want all of it.

  • +1

NextGen_Gamer method114 (on 13 January 2025)

No, I agree, just pointing out that we will never know for sure. I'd say there is a 1% chance that MS is allowed to do a Xbox Series bundle with it lol

Now, the real question is if Xbox is releasing their next-gen console in Nov 2026 - will there be a bundle with an enhanced, all DLC-released-to-date GTA VI with the console on day one. Considering the long, LONG sales tail that GTA is expected to have, even being a whole year old at that point, it would still be the biggest system seller to bundle in at launch.

Any bundle Xbox can do for it would be great for them but I just don't know how much they care about selling the hardware anymore. Apparently during the holidays they had almost no sales going.

I can't say I'm surprised, they didn't even try this year. US wise their black friday deal cost more than PS5 as I recall, and in other countries they tried even less. No permanent price cuts the whole gen, only small temporary discounts, no Holiday bundles, no limited edition console designs this year, they didn't even release their controller that leaked out that copied the PS5 controller features.

Can someone explain to me why the Xbox Series have such a little boost during the holiday season even compared to Xbox One?

  • -1

CosmicSex Zeltaz13 (on 11 January 2025)

Because people aren't really interested in the Xbox. Social media, YouTube and gaming sites don't reflect reality. Xbox gets an enormous amount of press and Microsoft spends a lot of money on promotion and PR. But the amount of press coverage doesn't reflect the broad lack of disinterest people have for the product. It is boosted in coverage simple because Microsoft is cash rich. Xbox has Privilege that is not afforded to anyone else.

It's also amazing the noise Xbox fans make. I visit a Spanish forum where both Xbox and PS sub-forums have nearly the same traffic and Xbox in Spain has like 1/10th or less the installed base.

The Xbox One X launched in November 2017 (November 2024 equivalent for the XSeries). People were genuinely excited for it and it sold pretty well. In contrast no-one is excited about XSeries anymore and MS is porting games for PS instead. major difference

Well... Series race is over. This will not change, and it is gonna be uglier.
Time to get a new generation and put MS studios to develop for it with the new hardware in mind (as they already are probably doing)

  • -2

prendimappe JohnVG (on 11 January 2025)

And why would anyone go to buy that new xbox? Especially since after those acquisitions microsoft can’t afford to keep whatever games they make exclusive.

  • +5

Esparadrapo prendimappe (on 11 January 2025)

And when would this next gen launch? We are 4 years into this gen. 2025 is out of the question and the reputational damage would be far too great for simply cutting the generation short and shafting the current Xbox users. 2026 is still cutting it short and the degradation of the Xbox brand falling off a cliff would make it a tough sell. By 2027 I highly doubt there's anything salvageable in the brand.

  • +2

JohnVG prendimappe (on 11 January 2025)

And why not? 360 sold fantastic in 2005, and Xbox was released just in 2002 in Europe and 2001 in US.

If they had the same third PS5 party games, with better graphics, it will sell a lot. And that's easy being a PC based machines. No need to talk about MS studios games.

Slownenberg prendimappe (on 13 January 2025)

Yeah honestly I'm not even sure Microsoft should make another Xbox. They are clearly going towards Game Pass PAAS strategy and with how poorly Series is doing it seems like from a business perspective in a couple years they should just announce Game Pass is their focus instead of hardware and make deals with Sony and Nintendo to get Game Pass on those systems and focus on getting as much software sales and Game Pass subscribers as they can while leaving behind the money pit that is the Xbox hardware line.
