Xbox seems committed to the future of OG and 360 console games
- We have a big list of Xbox 360 games that are backwards compatible
- Microsoft is hiring a principal software engineer to work with the backward compatibility team
- Game preservation is at the core of the role on offer, suggesting a big future for 360 and OG Xbox games
"Your work will help identify and outline the specific requirements and security boundaries for protecting game content, build scalable emulation solutions, and ensure a safe and fun gameplay experience for all players," it reads. "Our technology solutions are a critical part of enabling the Xbox goal of allowing players to experience their games on any device."
It continues: "As a Principal Software Engineer in Xbox, you will coordinate across teams to define and implement the Xbox backward compatibility game security system to protect game assets while improving the experience for our customers."You will work with other experienced emulation engineers to deliver high-quality solutions that not only protect game content but also improve the experience of installing compatible games. You will be a key contributor to the technology solutions developed to emulate legacy games on modern platforms."
There are two more bullet points I want to point out from the posting:
- You will design and build solutions that enable system-level emulation across the catalog of Xbox content.
- You will actively engage in experimental and highly complex, ambiguous technology spaces to improve the product.
Microsoft wants to use new AI to preserve and revive classic Xbox games
The future of Xbox consoles will also be dealing with backwards compatibility of OG Xbox, 360, One, and Series X|S games as well. It's been suggested that there will be a new approach to keeping our libraries preserved for a new generation, and it could be that this new role is a part of that project. In any case, it's great to know that at minimum, people are working on game preservation and backwards compatibility.
So, no matter your favorite Xbox console, you'll be safe in the knowledge that the best Xbox games will hopefully be playable in some way. That sounds good, right? Tell me what backwards-compatible games you've been playing in the comments below, TrueAchievements old timers!
